Suicide assisted by right-to-die associations: a population based cohort study.

A study of assisted suicide in Switzerland

The results of an interesting study have been published in the International Journal of Epidemiology. The study examined the characteristics of over 1,000 cases of legal assisted suicide in Switzerland between 2003 and 2008.

It found that “assisted suicide was more likely in women than in men” and “those living alone compared with those living in households with others, the divorced compared with the married”.

It also found that assisted suicide was more common in well-educated people, in urban areas and in neighbourhoods of higher socio-economic position compared with people with compulsory education only, rural areas and neighbourhoods of lower socio-economic position.
