‘Assisted dying’ is a complex subject, transcending many fields of expertise including the law, medicine, ethics and society. Sadly, it is all too often discussed in simplistic and one-dimensional terms.

In this article Charles Foster breaks down the subject into its component parts and subjects the various arguments for and against changing the law to critical analysis.

He draws no conclusions: as he says at the outset of his article, his aim is “to provide the information necessary for intelligent engagement in the debate”.
