High Court Judgment in the case of Mr Noel Conway.

English law on assisting suicide is compatible with the European Convention on Human Rights.

On 5 October 2017 the High Court delivered its Judgment in respect of an application on behalf of Mr Noel Conway, who has motor neurone disease, for a ruling that Section 2 of the 1961 Suicide Act, under which encouragement of or assistance with suicide is a criminal offence, constitutes a disproportionate interference with respect for his private life under Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) and is therefore incompatbile with that Article of the ECHR.  The Court, whose Judgment may be read here in full, ruled that Section 2 of the 1961 Act was compatible with Mr Conway’s rights under Article 8 of the ECHR and dismissed the application.
