Official annual report on the practice of euthanasia and assisted suicide in The Netherlands in 2008.
This is the annual report for 2008 of the five regional euthanasia review committees in The Netherlands on the working of that country’s 2002 ‘Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide (Review Procedures) Act’.
The report provides details of the number of reported cases of voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide; the nature of the cases; the committees’ findings; and the considerations on which these were based.
The number of notifications received under the Act rose from 2,120 in 2007 to 2,331 in 2008, an increase of just under 10 per cent. As subsequent reports were to reveal, this annual rate of increase was to become greater – a 13 per cent increase between 2008 and 2009 being followed by a 19 per cent increase between 2009 and 2010 and an 18 per cent increase between 2010 and 2011. By 2011 there would be almost double the number of reported cases of euthanasia or assisted suicide as in the first year’s of the Act’s operation.
