Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill Bill (2005) – Second Reading.

The Debate on Lord Joffe’s 2005 “Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill” Bill.

In November 2005 Lord Joffe tabled a second “Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill” bill.  His first bill of this title, tabled in 2004, was the subject of a full select committee inquiry.  Lord Joffe’s 2005 bill, which was a modified version of the 2004 bill, was debated at Second Reading in the House of Lords on 12 May 2006.  The debate lasted for nearly 8 hours, during which over 90 Members spoke.  The bill was rejected by 148 votes against 100.  Here we publish the Hansard record of the debate. The text of the bill may be accessed here.
