This is the annual report for 2009 of the five regional euthanasia review committees in The Netherlands on the working of that country's 2002 'Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide (Review Procedures) Act'.
The report provides details of the number of reported cases of voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide; the nature of the cases; the committees’ findings; and the considerations on which these were based.
The number of notifications received under the Act rose from 2,331 in 2008 to 2,636 in 2009, an increase of just over 13%. As subsequent reports were to reveal, the annual rate of increase was to become greater in 2010 and 2011 - by 2011 there would be almost double the number of reported cases of euthanasia or assisted suicide as in the first year's of the Act's operation.
